Genetically Engineered For Your Dining Pleasure...

Did You Know...

"The FDA is in the final stages of approving AquaBounty's genetically engineered (GE) salmon for food, despite the fact that these fish often suffer serious health problems. Outrageously, the USDA just gave $500,000 of tax-payer money to AquaBounty to develop its GE fish.

These GE salmon have been engineered to contain genes from other species to grow twice as fast as those in the wild. They frequently suffer from skeletal deformities, jaw erosions, inflammation, lesions, increased susceptibility to disease, and increased mortality, raising serious concerns about animal health and welfare, as well as environmental risks if fish escape.

Recently, the Prevention of Escapement of Genetically Altered Salmon in the United States (PEGASUS) Act was introduced in the Senate. This bill would ban the transport, sale, purchase, or possession of GE fish in interstate or foreign commerce, and would effectively make it impossible to sell GE fish in the U.S.

If you want to stop the sale of genetically altered fish, please let your Congressional representatives know that you want the Pegasus Act passed."

Something's Fishy About Fish Oil

Did you know...

"Fish absorb and intensely concentrate toxins like PCBs, dioxins, radioactive substances, and heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic, all of which are linked to cancer as well as nervous system disorders, kidney damage, and impaired mental functioning. They contain excessive amounts of cholesterol, animal protein, and hazardous, blood-altering oils."

Where Can We Get Our Omega-3 Fatty Acids Then?
The healthiest sources are (ground) flax seeds, walnuts, soybeans, tofu, hemp oil, dark greens, and seaweeds.

"Ask Amy" On Not Eating Fish

Q: I understand why you don't eat red meat, pigs, or chickens. But what's the deal with not eating fish?
A: Seafood was the last to go when I transitioned to a plant-based diet. There were three things that compelled me to stop eating fish:
1. Studies have verified that fish have nervous systems and feel pain. They suffer when they are caught and suffocate aboard fishing boats.
2. An increasing number of fish, like salmon, are farmed. They are jammed into tanks, unable to move and breathe properly, fed an unnatural diet of grain, and often left to suffer from various infections.
3. There are a staggering number of sea creatures who are caught in the nets, along with the sought-after fish. They are left to die on fishing boats and are then thrown overboard. These are known as by-catch, and their deaths are contributing to the destruction of certain marine species and the ecosystem. I'll likely include a separate email on the devastating effects of by-catch soon.
